Gorongosa National Park is recruiting 1 Ecological Monitoring Intern to join the Science Department, with activities based at the Pringle Lab in Chitengo. This is a paid opportunity for final-year students or recent Mozambican graduates who want to gain hands-on experience in field research, biodiversity conservation, and applied ecological monitoring.

Role overview

The internship is expected to begin on June 1, 2026, will run for 3 months , and will be supervised by the Pringle Lab Field Manager. The work will take place within one of Africa’s most significant ecological restoration programmes, with research carried out in partnership with Princeton University.

The Pringle Lab conducts research on ecosystems, biodiversity, large-mammal population restoration, and ecological recovery processes, using methods such as DNA metabarcoding, GPS telemetry, and LiDAR remote sensing.

Key responsibilities

The selected intern will support technical and operational field activities, with a focus on collecting ecological data and monitoring wildlife and vegetation.

  • Collecting faecal samples for diet analysis.

  • Monitoring antelope foraging behaviour.

  • Surveying and analysing vegetation.

  • Monitoring camera traps.

  • Supporting antelope capture and collaring.

  • Tracking wildlife through GPS telemetry.

  • Working within a multidisciplinary field team, including collaboration with partner researchers.

At the end of the internship, submission of a written technical report and a PowerPoint presentation will be required.

Candidate profile

  • Mozambican nationality.

  • Final-year student or recent graduate in Biology or a related field.

  • Basic English skills.

  • Previous experience in ecological sampling will be considered an advantage.

  • Good physical fitness for fieldwork.

  • Preference will be given to candidates living in Sofala or Manica provinces.
