Save the Children International (SCI), a non-profit humanitarian organization focused on child welfare, is recruiting one (1) Project Accountant based in Nampula.

Job Purpose

The project accountant will be responsible for all accounting and bookkeeping functions of the field offices. Additionally, the position will be responsible for the efficient and effective management of SC's cash flow, updating and reconciling the accounting books, managing period-end closing procedures, and ensuring the generation of accurate and timely monthly financial reports for the country office. The position is also responsible for the technical supervision of accountants in the region.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the jobholder is expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to adjust working hours accordingly.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Accounting, or Business Administration from a recognized university is required.

Essential

  • At least 5 years of relevant and progressive professional experience working with international NGOs in a humanitarian and development context, of which 3 years must be at financial management level.

  • Strong accounting skills and experience, including ledger management, journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, and balance sheet analysis.

  • Solid experience in reporting to external donors in an international NGO and experience working with major donors such as USAID, SIDA, EU, KOICA, NORAD, DANIDA, Mastercard Foundation, UN, etc.

  • Strong financial management skills, with knowledge of accounting software and a solid understanding of government budgets and tax policies.

  • Proven ability to work in a team with minimal supervision, prioritizing tasks and meeting tight deadlines.

  • Planning, organizational, and negotiation skills.

  • Experience working with local partners and district local governments in implementing health, education, HIV/AIDS, or child protection programs.

  • The ability to speak the local language and interact directly with the target audience will be an additional advantage.

  • Strong analytical and strategic planning skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain favorable collegial working relationships and to perform effectively as a team member.

  • Willingness to travel and work in hard-to-reach areas, occasionally under arduous conditions.

  • Computer literacy and excellent documentation skills are essential.

  • Availability and willingness to work overtime during humanitarian response periods.

  • High level of cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

  • Ability to intervene in crisis management or problem-solving as needed.

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including influencing, negotiation, and coaching.

  • Excellent time management and planning skills.

  • Availability and willingness to work overtime during humanitarian response periods.

Desirable

  • Experience in auditing, knowledge and application of tax legislation are desirable.
