The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is recruiting a National Agronomist to join the Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project team, an initiative focused on promoting resilient agricultural practices and adaptation to climate change in Mozambique. This is a unique opportunity for professionals with experience in rural extension and natural resource management who wish to directly contribute to food security and environmental sustainability in the country. The vacancy is based in Maputo, with an initial contract of 6 months and an application deadline of 01 July 2026.

  • Coordinate and supervise field activities focused on resilient agriculture and adaptation to climate change;

  • Support and monitor the training cycles of Farmer Field Schools (FFS), ensuring the transfer of knowledge to local farmers;

  • Provide technical assistance to extension agents and lead farmers, strengthening capabilities locations;

  • Support the implementation of e-voucher systems for efficient distribution of agricultural inputs;

  • Prepare technical reports and document results, impacts and good practices of the project;

  • Coordinate activities with partners, SDAEs and other project teams, ensuring the integration of actions.

FAO's EbA project aims to strengthen the resilience of rural communities in the face of climate change, promoting sustainable agricultural practices that increase productivity and protect ecosystems. Your work will have a direct impact on the lives of family farmers in Mozambique, helping to implement nature-based solutions that combine technical knowledge and local knowledge. The role requires presence on the ground, with regular visits to communities and coordination with government and local partners.

What profile makes sense

FAO is looking for professionals with solid training and practical experience in agricultural extension and climate adaptation. The main requirements include:

  • Degree in Agriculture, Rural Extension, Forestry or Natural Resource Management;

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in agricultural extension, resilient agriculture or related areas;

  • Knowledge of English and Portuguese (spoken and written);

  • Proven experience of working with rural communities in Mozambique;

  • Knowledge of the Farmer Field School (FFS) methodology is a significant advantage;

  • Knowledge of local languages of Maputo Province (Changana, Ronga, among others) is an added value.
