The Strategic Role of the Field Extension Officer

The Field Extension Officer will be the main point of contact on the ground, ensuring the technical execution and monitoring of SPOM Project activities in the districts of Rapale, Lalaua, Malema and Murrupula, in the province of Nampula. Its mission will be to train local producers in the adoption of Agro-forestry Systems (SAF), Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM) techniques, land restoration strategies and principles of regenerative agriculture.

This professional will be essential to guarantee the highest quality in the implementation of activities, the accurate collection of essential data for monitoring the project and strict adherence to the technical standards established by AVSI. Your direct work with farmers and the community will be the driving force for the success and sustainability of the proposed interventions.

Detailed Responsibilities and Impact on the Field

Your responsibilities encompass a diverse range of activities essential to achieving the project objectives:

  • Implementation of Agro-forestry Systems (SAF): Lead the practical implementation of SAFs, ensuring that the technical guidelines and project objectives are met in each intervention plot.
  • Nursery and Plantation Management: Supervise and support nursery operations, manage seedling distribution logistics and closely monitor all planting activities, ensuring the success of new crops.
  • Adoption of SALM Practices: Work side by side with farmers to facilitate the incorporation of Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM) practices, promoting efficiency and conservation of natural resources.
  • Promoting Regenerative Agriculture: Actively disseminate the principles of regenerative agriculture, soil conservation techniques and the importance of nature-based solutions for the health of the agricultural ecosystem.
  • Continuous Technical Assistance: Provide specialized and personalized technical support to beneficiary farmers, responding to their specific needs and challenges in real time.
  • Training and Training: Develop and deliver practical training and engaging field demonstrations, equipping producers with the necessary skills and knowledge.
  • Agricultural Plot Monitoring: Conduct regular and systematic field visits to monitor the development of agricultural parcels, identify progress and challenges, and ensure compliance with project plans.
  • Digital Data Collection: Use digital tools, including online forms, GPS and georeferencing technologies, to collect accurate and efficient technical data, essential for analysis and reporting.
  • Support for Carbon Markets: Actively collaborate in monitoring activities related to the stringent requirements of voluntary carbon markets, specifically the Verra standards.
  • Preparation of Technical Reports: Compile and present detailed periodic technical reports on the progress of activities, results achieved and lessons learned, ensuring transparent communication with the management team.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with the Deputy Agronomist Coordinator in the strategic design and fluid execution of project activities.
  • Institutional Coordination: Establish and maintain strong working relationships with community leaders, representatives of District Services and other relevant local entities to ensure support and integration of the project into local dynamics.

Essential Profile of the Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a professional with a solid academic background and a genuine passion for rural development. Essential requirements include:

  • A Degree in Rural Development, Agronomy, Social Sciences or intrinsically linked areas, obtained from a higher education institution of recognized academic merit.

To excel in this role, the candidate must possess a robust set of skills and practical experience:

  • Proven Extension Experience: Demonstrate substantial experience in community or rural extension, effective social mobilization, or direct implementation of development projects on the ground.
  • Participatory Methodologies: Have in-depth and practical knowledge of participatory methodologies and community facilitation techniques that empower local populations.
  • Linguistic Fluency: Complete command of the Portuguese language, combined with a functional knowledge of the local languages spoken in the intervention area in Nampula.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Present strong skills in monitoring and reporting activities, including the ability to collect and basic data management in an organized and reliable way.
  • Mobility and Availability: Be fully available to travel frequently in rural areas, often with challenging access.
  • Autonomy and Proactivity: Demonstrate a strong ability to work independently, taking initiative and anticipating needs.
  • Organization and Flexibility: Excellent organization and planning skills, combined with remarkable flexibility to adapt to different scenarios and priorities.
  • Responsibility and Resilience: A high sense of responsibility, own initiative and a proven ability to effectively manage work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Attention to Detail: Accurate attention to detail, crucial for precision in data collection and task execution.
