About CISM and the SLAN Study
TheCentro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (CISM), headquartered in Manhiça, Province ofMaputo, is an internationally prestigious institution, recognized for the quality and rigor of its research in public health, tropical diseases, and biomedicine in resource-limited settings.
TheSLANstudy focuses on the diagnosis, monitoring, and control of parasitic diseases — namelyschistosomiasisandsoil-transmitted helminthiases— in vulnerable populations. This is a project with direct implications for national public health and with international scientific visibility.
The Field Supervisor — Laboratory will serve as an operational pillar of this research, ensuring that every sample, every record, and every procedure meets the highest standards of scientific and ethical quality.
The Role and Its Impact
As aField Supervisor — Laboratory, your core mission will be to ensure thedaily coordination of laboratory activitiesfor the SLAN study in Namaacha. You will be responsible for the quality, traceability, and integrity of all processes — from sample reception through to the submission of final data.
Your work will have a direct impact on the scientific validity of the study's results and, consequently, on the public health policies that stem from them. This is not merely a technical role — it is a position ofoperational leadershipwith real accountability over people, processes, and outcomes.
Detailed Responsibilities
Laboratory Coordination and Supervision
- Supervise and coordinate thedaily laboratory activitiesassociated with the study, ensuring strict adherence to the established protocol.
- Oversee thereception, identification, processing, and registrationof stool and urine samples, ensuring full traceability at every stage.
- Ensureexact correspondencebetween field forms, laboratory records, and analytical results, eliminating identification errors or inconsistencies.
- Provide technical support to the local team in carrying out the planned laboratory techniques, includingKato-Katz, urine filtration, and preparation of aliquots forqPCR.
Quality Control and Compliance
- Implement and monitorlaboratory quality control procedures, including record verification, critical review of results, and systematic documentation of non-conformities.
- Ensure that all procedures are carried out in accordance with the study protocol, theStandard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and internationally recognized good laboratory practices.
- Verify thequality, completeness, and consistencyof laboratory data prior to submission to the data team or study coordination.
- Ensure theconfidentiality of participant dataand strict adherence to the ethical principles applicable to health research.
Biosafety and Materials Management
- Ensure full compliance withbiosafety standards, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling of biological samples, and correct management of laboratory waste.
- Monitor theavailability and appropriate useof materials, reagents, consumables, and equipment required for the continuous operation of laboratory activities.
- Promptly inform study coordination ofmaterial replenishment needs, technical challenges, delays, or detected non-conformities.
Sample and Data Management
- Support theorganization, preservation, and traceabilityof samples intended for subsequent analyses, including analyses byqPCR, where applicable.
- Ensure the integrity of the sample chain of custody, from collection to final storage, with no gaps in identification or documentation.
Team Leadership and Communication
- Guide and support the local laboratory team, fostering aculture of quality, rigor, and accountabilityshared by all team members.
- Serve as theliaisonbetween the laboratory team, the field team, the health unit, and the study's central coordination.
- Prepare and submitregular reportson the progress of laboratory activities, quality control, materials stock, and key operational challenges encountered.
Ideal Candidate Profile
CISM is looking for a professional witha solid technical background, a strong sense of responsibility, and a demonstrated ability to work with rigor in research environments. Attention to detail, proactiveness, and leadership capability in field settings are absolutely essential qualities for success in this role.
Academic Background
- Secondary level — 12th grade(required), preferably in Laboratory Science, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields.
- Undergraduate degree in progress or completed inBiosciences, Public Health, Clinical Laboratory Analysisor related fields will be considered asignificant advantage.
Professional Experience
- Minimum experience of1 yearin the preparation of laboratory reagents and solutions.
- Previous experience in laboratory activities related tomedical parasitology.
- Basic knowledge ofschistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases.
- Experience in performing or supervisingKato-Katz and urine filtration techniqueswill be considered a competitive advantage.
- Experience inhealth research studieswill be highly valued.
Technical and Behavioral Competencies
- Proven ability toorganize laboratory recordsand ensure sample traceability within a study context.
- Ability to work effectively inmultidisciplinary teams, with diverse profiles and roles.
- Strongoral and written communication skills in Portuguese; knowledge of English will be an advantage.
- Proactive and organized profile with a strong sense ofethical responsibilityin handling participant data.

- Mozambicannationality.
- Age between18 and 49 years old.
- Availability to work on-site inNamaacha, Province ofMaputo.
