CV for ATS systems: a practical guide
Learn how to build a CV for applicant tracking systems (ATS): single column, PDF, keywords. Create your profile and receive job vacancies on WhatsApp and email.

Automated screening (ATS) reads the text of your CV and looks for keywords from the job posting. A simple, single-column CV with the right keywords gives you the best chance of reaching a human recruiter.
The first reader of your CV is not a person. It is a computer program. In the Inademy Guide, we explain how to build a CV that this software can read — and how that reading leads to a real recruiter.
The Short Answer
Automated screening does not judge your CV's design: it reads the text and looks for words from the job posting. The essentials fit into a few key points:
- Single column, top to bottom, portrait A4 format;
- Real, clear text — the software reads text, not images or graphics;
- Standard section headings ("Work Experience", "Education", "Skills");
- .docx or PDF file;
- Maximum of two pages;
- Keywords from the job ad in your CV: job title, tools, languages, years of experience.
In Mozambique, automated screening relies on profile filters on job platforms. Your CV will still ultimately be read by a person.
What Is an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and Why Does It Matter to You
ATS stands for "Applicant Tracking System". It is software that receives CVs submitted for a vacancy and organizes them before a human recruiter sees them. When a job posting receives a high volume of applications, the system performs the initial screening.
How does it work in practice? The software reads the text in your file and compares it with the job ad. If your CV includes words from the ad, it has a higher chance of reaching a human. If your CV is a stylish image that the system cannot parse, it sees nothing.
Mozambican job portals are clear about this: automated screening systems generally prefer CVs in Word or PDF format and analyze them before a human recruiter does. The recommendations, published in October 2025, are straightforward:
Opt for simple templates with clear text and minimal graphic elements.
It is the same principle as always: if the system cannot read it, the application does not count. And the complicated part? There is none. For a full step-by-step walkthrough, check out our guide on how to write a CV in Mozambique.

How to Create a CV That ATS Systems Can Read
Take it step by step. Each step is quick: in the end, you will have a CV that software can read from start to finish.
Single Column, Portrait A4 Format
Use a single column, top to bottom, in portrait A4 format. This is the recommended layout: the system reads the text sequentially without skipping sections. Multi-column designs and sidebars can cause parsing errors in many ATS platforms.
Simple Font, 11 to 12 Point Text Size
Choose a standard font — Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman — at 11 or 12 points. The goal is for every word to be parsed easily. Decorative fonts and special characters may be misread as symbols or skipped by the software.
Standard Section Headings
Label your sections with standard headers everyone recognizes: "Work Experience", "Education", "Skills", "Languages". Avoid creative alternatives. The software looks for standard terms — and so does the recruiter.
Real Text, Never Images
Type everything as actual text. Do not submit your CV as an image file and do not hide content inside graphics or text boxes. The software only reads plain text in the file: anything else does not exist to it.
Job Keywords in Your CV
Re-read the job description carefully. Highlight recurring terms: job title, responsibilities, tools, languages, required years of experience. Then align them with your CV. If the job requires "teamwork" and "Excel", these exact terms should appear in your CV — provided they are accurate.
Never copy the job ad directly and never fabricate skills. Exaggerating or lying on a CV has been cited as the #1 mistake by MozYouth, a Mozambican youth organization, since July 2024.
Save as Word or PDF
Submit your CV in .docx or PDF format. A .docx file is usually the most reliable choice: systems read the text without formatting risks. Modern PDFs are also parsed well, but if given a choice, Word is the safest option. If the job ad specifies a format, follow it exactly.
One to Two Pages
The recommended length is one to two pages — two pages maximum. Trim anything that adds no value: old training unrelated to the position, short gigs lasting just a few weeks, unnamed references. A clean one-page CV is far better than three cluttered pages.

What NOT to Do — Errors Penalized by ATS Screening
Some of these errors prevent the system from reading your CV properly. Others — an informal email address, fabricated experience, a generic CV — might pass automated screening but cost you the recruiter's trust.
Regarding these mistakes, two main sources consistently point them out: Mozambican job portals, which compiled them in September and October 2025, and MozYouth, which has highlighted the same issues since July 2024.
- Tables. Automated tools read text line by line, and tables scramble the reading order. What looks organized to you can end up as garbled text for the recruiter. Use bullet points and commas instead.
- Two-column layouts and sidebars. Software reads across columns, which can merge sentences or chop up text. The recruiter ends up receiving broken copy.
- Text inside images. If your CV is saved as an image file, the software has nothing to extract — and your application goes unnoticed, even if a recruiter opens it.
- Creative section headers. "My Journey" or "Who I Am" mean nothing to ATS software. It searches for standard headings like "Work Experience", "Education", "Skills". Save creative titles for design projects, not ATS screening.
- Icons and symbols. Icons, arrows, and special characters may register as garbled text or be ignored completely. If it is not a letter or a number, it is not text.
- Excessive personal details. This is one of the most common mistakes cited by Mozambican job portals: national ID number, marital status, or religion do not improve your chances. Moreover, Mozambican law protects you — Law 13/2023 of August 25, Article 8, safeguards your personal data and prohibits employers from demanding private information.
- Multiple fonts and colors. Using five fonts and ten colors in one document is a frequent blunder. Stick to one font family, consistent sizing, and dark text on a white background.
- Informal email address. The email at the top of your CV should be simple and professional: firstname.lastname@.... An old school email address might pass ATS filters, but it won't impress the recruiter.
- Fabricated work experience. Besides being unethical, it is ineffective: MozYouth lists dishonesty as the #1 error on CVs. Platforms in Mozambique filter by verified years of experience — and fabrications crumble during interviews.
- Sending the exact same CV everywhere. A generic CV submitted to every opening tells the recruiter you didn't pay attention to the job description.
- MozYouth highlights this as a dealbreaker: sending identical copies of your CV to multiple companies. Re-read the ad, update the job title and relevant keywords — that is what turns an application into an interview call.
What Happens in Mozambique: Screening by Profiles, Not Scoring Robots
There is no verified source in Mozambique showing that automated ATS systems assign scores from 0 to 100 to CVs or reject candidates solely because of a profile photo. We won't make things up. What is verifiable: screening systems parse file text and search for job keywords.
Public data as of August 2026 shows something different. Mozambican job platforms filter candidates by profile criteria, not by CV scoring algorithms. Employers filter applicants based on parameters such as:
- Years of experience;
- Academic level and field of study;
- Gender and age;
- Proficiency in international and local languages;
- Location of residence;
- Professional licenses/certifications;
- Minimum salary expectation;
Do you see what this means? Screening in Mozambique operates through applicant profiles, not scoring robots. If you have the required years of experience, the matching education, and reside in the target province, your profile makes the shortlist. Your CV is then reviewed by a human recruiter.
Because of this, you need a two-pronged approach. Fill out every platform field carefully — years of experience, field of study, province. At the same time, design a CV that a human recruiter can scan and understand in two minutes. Both elements work hand in hand.
And a note on legal rights: your personal private life is not your employer's concern. Law 13/2023 of August 25 — the current labor law — protects your personal data under Article 8.
The same law sets the standard working week at 48 hours (Article 93). Your CV does not need to disclose more than necessary — and knowing your rights is part of presenting a serious application. The same applies to compensation: knowing minimum wages by sector in 2026 helps you articulate your salary expectations during interviews.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an ATS reject CVs with photos?
There is no verified source proving that ATS systems reject CVs with photos in Mozambique. What is verifiable is that ATS tools read text within files searching for keyword matches. If the job ad asks for a photo, include one. If not, passing screening depends on your content, not your photo.
Word or PDF?
Both are accepted and recommended by Mozambican job portals. Modern systems parse both effectively, though .docx is considered the safest format. If a job ad specifies a particular format, submit that exact format.
How many pages should a CV be?
One to two pages. Two pages maximum — this is recommended by Mozambican job portals and aligns with what a recruiter can carefully review.
Can I use two columns or a sidebar?
No. Stick to a single column, top to bottom, in A4 portrait layout: this is the format software reads sequentially without missing content.
What are CV keywords?
Keywords are specific terms used in the job description: job title, responsibilities, tools, languages, required years of experience. Highlight recurring words in the ad and ensure they appear naturally in your CV, provided they are truthful. Never copy job ads verbatim or fabricate skills.
How do I know if my CV will pass ATS screening?
There is no official test or ATS score to check, as there is no verified source showing Mozambican systems rank CVs with numerical scores. However, you can check if your file is readable. Save your CV and open it in a basic text reader: if you can highlight and copy the text, software can read it too. If it opens as an unselectable image, there is nothing for ATS to read.
