Cover Letter Guide for Mozambican Job Applications
Write a winning cover letter that passes recruiter screening: learn the 5-part structure, Mozambican examples, and key mistakes to land your dream job.

A cover letter is the short text that accompanies your CV and, in Mozambique, is often your first voice before the interview. If it does not speak well of you, your CV risks not even being read.

The short answer
A cover letter is not legally required, but it is standard practice in recruitment in Mozambique. It explains, in less than one page, why you are applying for this role and what you can do.
- Concise and targeted: your connection to the role and 2 or 3 examples of what you can do.
- Never use the exact same letter: tailor 2 or 3 lines to each role.
- No unnecessary details: no ID number, no tax ID (NUIT), no place of birth.
- Right format: PDF or Word, as requested; on WhatsApp, send only a short message with your CV.
What a cover letter is (and when you need it)
A cover letter is a short text that accompanies your CV. It is not a second CV—it is your voice. In it, you explain who you are, why this vacancy interests you, and what you bring to the role.
In Mozambique, the standard practice is to send the letter along with your CV by email or WhatsApp, attaching the CV. Mozambican job portals follow this trend by offering free downloadable Word cover letter templates right next to CV templates. In short, the cover letter comes with the CV, not instead of it.
There is an important detail worth knowing. Mozambican job platforms filter applications by your profile: years of experience, education level, field of study, location, languages, licenses, and salary expectations.
The letter is not what gets you through the filter. It comes into play later, when a person reads your application—and that is where it sets you apart from others.
Think of the letter as your written business card: Mozambican job portals describe the CV as your career marketing tool. The letter shows how you think and communicate.
The CV shows what you have; the letter shows how you think and communicate. Often, it is what prompts the recruiter to call you. And if your CV is not ready yet, start with the guide on how to make a CV in Mozambique.

Letter structure: 5 blocks that work
A cover letter does not need to be creative: it needs to be clear. These five blocks cover the essentials and adapt to any position.
1. Greeting
Start with the company and department name. Example: "Dear Human Resources Team at Maputo Logística, Lda." If you know the recruiter's name, use it: it is a detail that shows attention.
2. Who you are and the position you are applying for
In two or three lines: your name, a detail about yourself, and the exact title of the advertised vacancy. Example: "My name is Vanessa Chissano, an administrative assistant in Maputo, and I am applying for the Administrative Assistant position advertised on the company's careers page."
3. Why you want this position
Two or three lines tied to the job ad, without empty flattery. If the post mentions records management and customer service, write exactly that. Example: "I chose this role because the ad mentions records management and customer service—the two areas I have worked in for the past three years."
4. What you offer
Two or three skills with concrete examples. Example: "In my current role, I organize physical and digital records, process monthly invoices, and assist customers at the desk. I am proficient in Word and Excel, including tables and basic formulas."
If you lack experience, present your education and willingness to learn—without excuses or drama.
5. Sign-off and contact details
Close with your availability for an interview and provide your mobile number and email. Example: "I am available for an interview. Contact: +258 84 XXX XXXX and vanessa.chissano@email.com. Best regards, Vanessa Chissano."
Mentioning that your CV is attached is a good sign: it shows you know how to submit a complete application.
How to write about the job without being generic
The most common mistake is writing a "universal" cover letter and sending it to ten companies with minimal changes. MozYouth, a Mozambican youth organisation, pointed out in an article on 17 July 2024 that sending a generic CV with "everyone CC'd" is a serious error. In our article on CVs for automated screening systems, you will see how to adapt your CV to each job post.
Mozambican job portals also list generic CVs and cover letters among the main reasons for employer silence—alongside cumulative requirements that stack demands, and out-of-field applications where you apply for a role that has nothing to do with your profile.
The solution is simple: pull words directly from the ad. If the job post asks for "stock management", write "stock management" and explain what you did in that area. If it asks for "customer service", mention your counter experience. Two or three tailored lines per vacancy are enough—the rest of the letter can stay the same.
Run a quick test before sending: if you swap the job title and the letter remains unchanged, it is generic. Re-read the ad and rewrite those lines.
Email cover letter vs. PDF cover letter (and WhatsApp cover letter)
The format depends on the submission channel, and each channel has its own rules.
By email
The subject line says it all: "Application — Administrative Assistant — Vanessa Chissano". The body of the email should be concise: three or four lines introducing who you are, the job role, and an invitation to read further. The cover letter can be placed in the body or attached, and the CV should always be sent as a PDF or Word document, as recommended by Mozambican job portals.
A single detail can eliminate job applications: the email address. In September 2025, a Mozambican job portal highlighted informal email addresses as one of the most common mistakes. Do not use an address from your school days; create one using your full name that is simple and professional.
As a PDF
When a job opening asks for an attached cover letter, submit it as a PDF: the layout remains intact on any screen. Name the file so the recruiter can identify it immediately — "Cover-Letter-Vanessa-Chissano.pdf". Keep it simple: use a single font without mixing colours, another mistake recorded by a Mozambican job portal in September 2025.
Via WhatsApp
WhatsApp is a common channel in Mozambique for receiving applications. Do not paste the entire cover letter there: send a brief message of three or four sentences — who you are, the position you want, a single line about your background — and attach the CV as a PDF.
Example: "Good afternoon. I am Edson Cossa, from Matola. I am applying for the Cashier position. I completed 12th grade and a computer course. Please find my CV attached."
The 5 mistakes that get your cover letter discarded
1. The generic cover letter
Using the same cover letter for every job opening is the most common mistake. If a recruiter reads a letter identical to twenty other applications, they have no reason to call you. Always tailor your statement of interest and what you offer.
2. The overly long cover letter
One page is enough. If the letter exceeds that and turns into a monologue about your life, no one will read it to the end. Cut what is non-essential: keep the job title, your interest, evidence of your skills, and contact details.
3. Language and spelling errors
A spelling mistake on the first line can eliminate an application right at the initial screening — and rejection is immediate. MozYouth highlights the volume of CVs that end up in the trash because of this. Read the letter out loud before sending it and ask someone else to read it as well.
4. Too much personal information
ID number, NUIT, place of birth, marital status: none of this helps you land the job. A Mozambican job portal, in September 2025, identified "excessive unnecessary personal information" as a common mistake in applications in Mozambique.
And there is a legal reason: Article 8 of Law 13/2023, the Mozambican Labor Law, protects your personal data: employers cannot demand information about your private life. If it is not required for the role, do not include it in the letter.
The same law sets the standard workweek at 48 hours (Article 93) — a useful benchmark when negotiating schedules and salaries. To find out how much people earn in each sector, check the minimum wages by sector in 2026.
5. Lying or making things up
Exaggerating or lying is the number one application error, according to MozYouth. A Mozambican job portal also added "fabricating experience" to the list. A lie only lasts until the interview: a single question about a job you never had is enough for everything to fall apart. Write what you actually did, backed up by concrete examples.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cover letter if I already have a CV?
It is not mandatory, but it is common practice in Mozambique. When the job listing asks for a "CV and cover letter", send both. If it only asks for a CV, you can put the cover letter in the body of the email in three or four lines.
Can I send the cover letter via WhatsApp?
You can, but the full letter belongs on paper: on WhatsApp, three or four sentences along with your CV in PDF format are enough to get read. If the company wants the full letter, they will ask for it.
How long should the letter be?
One page. Half a page is better than two. What matters is that every sentence adds value: if a sentence does not help you get the job, remove it.
No experience: what should I write in the letter?
Education, willingness to learn, and a concrete example of what you know how to do. Do not apologize: state clearly that you do not yet have experience and show that you have something to offer from day one.
Should I write the letter in English?
Follow the language of the job listing. If the job is in English, send the letter in English; if it is in Portuguese, write in Portuguese. Mixing both languages in a single letter shows a lack of organization.
A good cover letter does not get you the job on its own, but it gets your CV read. If you want to master the entire process, from CV to interview, the Inademy Guide has articles for every step.
