The essentials: The Embassy of the United States of America in Maputo is looking for a Bodyguard (personal protection agent) for its Regional Security Office (RSO). The official announcement (MAPUTO-2026-015) advertises a base salary of 18,655 USD per year and applications close on October 20, 2026.
This is a full-time, permanent position based in Maputo with a 40-hour work week. Applications must be submitted through the official U.S. Department of State recruitment portal.
The position does not allow telework nor does it reimburse travel/relocation expenses. Selection involves background investigation (Public Trust) and may include a pre-employment medical examination.
The U.S. Mission in Mozambique employs local staff to support its operations in Maputo. Personal protection services are provided by the Regional Security Office, the department responsible for managing the security of the Chief of Mission, other U.S. personnel, and official visitors.
You will protect the Ambassador or Chief of Mission and other designated or visiting U.S. Government officials in a varied and sometimes life-threatening environment. You operate under the supervision of the Bodyguard Supervisor and management of the Regional Security Officer, authorized to use force under Mozambican law, mission policy, and Department of State guidelines.
In close protection (approximately 70% of the time), you accompany the Chief of Mission on motorcade movements, foot movements, and at official residences; ensure perimeter security and counter-surveillance at events; and produce daily reports on duties, equipment, expenses, and incidents. The position requires travel to various locations across the country to support protection operations.
During site visits (approximately 20%), you support complex security coordination at hotels, convention centers, restaurants, and other event locations: participating in security surveys, recommending personnel and resource placement for access control, and planning primary, secondary, and emergency routes.
For liaison duties (approximately 10%), you build relationships with mid- to senior-level Mozambican officials—security forces, protocol personnel, and local security elements—to facilitate protective operations and maintain positive relations with the embassy protective detail.
You maintain regular liaison with security authorities across various jurisdictions in the country. The position may serve as a driver for the protectee, requiring high-level defensive driving skills.
You may also be required to perform other agency-assigned duties.
In addition to the base salary of 18,655 USD per year, the mission offers local employees a miscellaneous benefits allowance of 1,450 USD per year, paid biweekly, and comprehensive medical insurance for the employee and immediate dependents.
There is also a dedicated retirement plan with a lump-sum payment of 17.5% of the annual base salary per year of creditable service, available upon separation at age 55 or older with a minimum of 5 years of service. The mission provides death and disability benefits as well as a 13th-month bonus equal to 1/12 of the annual base salary, paid annually.
Employees are also granted 11 U.S. federal holidays in addition to official Mozambican public holidays.
Applications are submitted on the official U.S. Department of State recruitment portal: create your account at erajobs.state.gov, open the Bodyguard announcement (MAPUTO-2026-015), and click on "Apply to This Vacancy".
