Key Info: Bodyguard at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo — permanent local position, 40 hrs/week, published salary of 18,655 USD/year. Applications on the erajobs.state.gov portal; deadline October 20, 2026.
The U.S. Embassy in Maputo is looking for a Bodyguard for its Regional Security Office (RSO) — the unit managing security for diplomats and visiting officials in the country.
The person in this position executes protection operations for the Ambassador, Chief of Mission (COM), and other visiting officials, in a program with three priority tiers: close protection of the protectee, site visits, and ties with Mozambican security forces.
The job is not a routine driver assignment: it requires a physical assessment and a defensive driving test prior to start, and driving protectee vehicles is part of the duty when the operation requires it.
Someone with a minimum of three years of experience in personal body security, armed escort, police, infantry, or combat arms — in a military, police, or private sector context. The individual must work in sometimes hazardous environments while keeping calm, and accept variable schedules, 24-hour on-call shifts, and travel outside Maputo when required by operations.
Experience in driving armored vehicles and training in defensive driving are an advantage, when available.
Open the official employment portal of the U.S. Mission in Mozambique — erajobs.state.gov (vacancy MAPUTO-2026-015) — and click on "Apply to This Vacancy" at the top of the page. On the form, address each vacancy requirement: relevant experience, education, English and Portuguese language skills, and specific skills requested. The embassy notes that incomplete applications may be disqualified prior to closing.
Documents to attach to the form: a copy of identity document or passport (or work authorization), driver's license, and high school diploma. You can update your application at any time before the closing date.
Application deadline: October 20, 2026. After closing, the embassy human resources office will contact shortlisted candidates. Full details of the position are in the official announcement on the U.S. Embassy in Mozambique website.
