Behind every reform that transforms the economic life of a country, there is someone who studies the numbers with rigor — and knows how to turn them into decisions. The World Bank Group is looking for this person for Maputo: an Economist (requisition req38223) for a position in the institution's fiscal policy and growth area, integrated into the unit covering Eastern and Southern Africa.
This is a local recruitment process, based in the Mozambican capital, to support the economic dialogue between the Bank and the Government. Here, we have translated into English what is stated in the official vacancy announcement of the institution. Applications are submitted through the official careers portal (link in the application section), and the application deadline is indicated below.
Mozambique is going through a demanding phase: debt sustainability, natural resource revenue management, the need for more diversified growth, and job creation for a young population. The unit where this position is based monitors these exact fronts — macroeconomic stability, public finances, domestic revenue mobilization, and inclusive growth. The work weaves together policy dialogue, financing operations, technical assistance, and economic analysis —
tracking the conjuncture, producing regular economic updates, and diagnosing public finances. As an Economist on the team, your analysis feeds into policy briefs and documents that reach ministries and development partners. If you like seeing your analysis have an impact — moving beyond the spreadsheet to influence difficult conversations — you will find a rare place here for that to happen.
The role requires a balance that is not always easy to maintain. The first pillar is rigor: comfort with large datasets, economic models, and tight deadlines, without sacrificing quality when the conversation is technical. The second is clarity: knowing how to synthesize the complexity of economic modeling into precise recommendations, whether in technical discussions with peers or in policy dialogue with ministries and diplomats.
There will be weeks of deep analysis and others with back-to-back meetings with counterparts and partners; the person who steps into this role transitions well between both paces and upholds their own judgment in the most demanding discussions. If you have already produced economic analysis with real impact on public policy, this role will feel familiar.
The post sits in Maputo, on a 3-year contract (GF grade in the World Bank Group structure). The role is part of the Eastern and Southern Africa unit of the Fiscal Policy and Growth department, which covers 14 countries across three country management units. You will report to the unit's practice manager and work alongside the country director, senior and lead economists on the Mozambique team.
The official announcement does not disclose the compensation amount — these details are discussed directly with the institution for candidates advancing in the process. What the organization confirms in writing is the Group's benefits package: a pension plan; health, life,
and disability cover; and paid time off — including parental leave — with reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities. The contract duration and recruitment type are listed in the official overview. To enter the conversation about money well-prepared, prepare your response with the salary expectation guide we wrote.
Submit your application only through the official World Bank Group careers portal, on the requisition 38223 page. The process involves creating an account on that portal and submitting your resume in English; to make sure it is sharp,
it is worth checking out the guide we prepared on English CVs in Mozambique. Applications close at 23:59 (UTC) on 20 September 2026, which corresponds to 01:59 on 21 September in Mozambique's time zone. To step into your next interview fully prepared, follow our interview preparation guide.
