A selection process is open for 1 Forestry Project Technician position at CESAL, a non-governmental organisation that has been operating in Mozambique since 1997. The position is based in the city of Pemba, and the field of action covers the districts of Mecúfi and Metuge — passing through the Mieze Administrative Post — all within the project "Sowing the present, cultivating the future": regenerative agriculture and environmental governance in Cabo Delgado. Whoever joins, joins immediately: it is a 12-month contract, renewable, with a three-month probation period at the start. Applications close on 14 September 2026.
The pace here is field pace: the administrative base sits in the city of Pemba, but the work happens across the two districts, with daily travel — a role for someone who likes being out of the office.
You will work in close connection with the community committees that manage natural resources — the CGRN —, with the project team and with the technicians from SDAE and SDPI who carry out rural extension in the area. In practice, the role splits into three fronts:
1. Conservation and nursery. You carry forward the establishment of conservation reforestation areas with the responsible committees, and you are in charge of the community forest nursery, seedling production and the management of seeds from the planted areas, always together with the CGRN.
2. Income and community. You lead, with the same committees and the team, the income-generating initiatives as well as the compensation mechanisms the project provides; you are the main point of contact between committees, population and technical team in the day-to-day community work; you run practical training sessions and help prepare meetings and other gatherings that depend on field logistics.
3. Technical and information. You join the team in the preparatory technical studies, carried out at the administrative posts, which precede the introduction of new forest species and income-generating activities — surveys included; you fill in the tracking sheets for the planted areas and the compensation mechanisms using the KoBo Toolbox tool; you collaborate on drafting, publishing and disseminating good-practice manuals for the conservation of degraded areas and for forest management; you attend the team's progress meetings and the institutional coordination sessions with CESAL; and you support the project's communication, collecting photographs and testimonials from beneficiaries.
CESAL counts three decades of work and a presence in 12 countries, having arrived in Mozambique in 1997. Its mission, as described in the announcement, is to promote the human development of those most in need, building on the experience and assets of the beneficiaries themselves and giving them the role of true protagonists of their own lives. It likewise states that it handles its recruitment processes with equal opportunities and without discrimination, with special encouragement for applications from women and under-represented groups — selection rests on merit, competence, equality and transparency.
Honest note: the announcement does not disclose any salary figure. If you make it to the interview stage, that is the right moment to clarify this point — asking is not improper, it is professional.
Submission is by e-mail only, to cvmozambique@cesal.org, until 14/09/2026, with the exact reference in the subject line:
Tecnico Florestal_Mecufi
Keep the subject line exactly as written above (it is in Portuguese on purpose — it must match the official call).
The dossier has three pieces: the cover letter must give two answers — what makes your profile a fit for this vacancy, and the experience you bring to the role; the curriculum vitae accompanied by at least two references; and the dossier closes with an up-to-date criminal record certificate, under CESAL's PSEA protocols. Mind the exclusion rules: applications on paper or handed in person do not count; those that arrive incomplete — or whose letter strays from what was asked — leave the process immediately; and only those shortlisted for interview receive contact.
