The essentials: The Embassy of the United States of America in Maputo is looking for a Bodyguard (personal protection specialist) for its Regional Security Office (RSO). The official announcement (MAPUTO-2026-015) lists a base salary of 18,655 dollars per year, and applications are open until October 20, 2026.

It is a full-time permanent position based in Maputo with 40 hours per week. Applications must be submitted through the official U.S. Department of State recruitment portal.

The organization

The U.S. Mission in Mozambique employs local staff to support its operations in Maputo. Personal protection services are provided by the Regional Security Office, the office that manages the security of the Chief of Mission, other U.S. officials, and official visitors.

The role

You will protect the Ambassador or Chief of Mission and other designated or visiting United States government officials in a varied and sometimes life-threatening environment. You will act under the supervision of the Bodyguard Supervisor and the management of the Regional Security Officer, with authorization to use force in accordance with Mozambican law, mission policy, and Department of State guidelines.

In close protection (about 70% of the time), you accompany the Chief of Mission on motorcade movements, foot movements, and at official residences, ensure perimeter security and counter-surveillance at events, and produce daily reports on duties, equipment, expenses, and occurrences. The position requires travel to various locations across the country to support protection operations.

During site visits (about 20%), you support complex security arrangements at hotels, convention centers, restaurants, and other event locations: participate in security surveys, recommend personnel and resource placement to control access, and plan primary, secondary, and emergency routes.

In terms of liaison (about 10%), you build relationships with mid- and high-ranking Mozambican officials — security forces, protocol, and local security elements — to facilitate protection operations and maintain good relations with the embassy protection team.

You maintain regular liaison with security authorities across various jurisdictions in the country. The position may serve as the driver for the protectee, requiring high-level defensive driving skills.

You may also be called upon to perform other duties as assigned by the agency.

Published benefits

In addition to the base salary of 18,655 dollars per year, the mission offers local employees a miscellaneous benefits allowance of 1,450 dollars per year, paid biweekly, and comprehensive medical insurance for the employee and direct dependents.

There is also a dedicated retirement plan, with a lump-sum payment of 17.5% of the annual base salary per year of creditable service, available upon separation starting at age 55 with a minimum of 5 years of service. The mission guarantees death and disability benefits and a 13th-month bonus equal to 1/12 of the annual base salary, paid annually.

Additionally, 11 U.S. federal holidays are granted, in addition to Mozambican official holidays.
