The essentials — The Mozambique Red Cross (CVM) is looking for a Legal Advisor for its headquarters in Maputo, on a full-time basis. Applications are made by email to rhf.cvm@redcross.org.mz, with an updated CV, cover letter, and salary expectation, until October 28, 2026.
Under the supervision of the General Directorate, I provide legal advice to the organization on daily matters — including labor and contractual issues — and support legal assistance and legal sponsorship when requested. I also collaborate with Movement members in promoting and disseminating International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in Mozambique.
CVM is a relief, humanitarian and non-governmental society of a voluntary and public utility nature, auxiliary to the public authorities. It operates throughout the national territory, in accordance with the First Geneva Convention, and carries out its activities with the support of the State.
CVM's work is guided by seven fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. Staff respect these principles and work in accordance with the values of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
You provide legal assistance whenever requested, preventively or reactively, in matters within your competence. You support the negotiation, drafting, and review of documents — correspondence, memos, contracts, and agreements — in which CVM is a party.
You liaise with relevant departments to ensure legal risks are identified and appropriate measures taken. You provide consultancy on protection and risk management to the General Directorate, in particular regarding service provision, labor, and other contracts, and you monitor ongoing proceedings, proposing concrete actions for their settlement or coordinating external lawyers.
You recommend internal policies and procedures for the prevention of fraud and abuse and for the promotion of the movement's mission and values. You track ongoing legal proceedings involving CVM, monitor compliance with statutory obligations, and assist branches.
In coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross, you organize awareness-raising sessions on Red Cross Emblem legislation before key stakeholders and support IHL promotion activities with ministries, the armed forces, and academic institutions.
You need a degree in Law; a postgraduate degree in Human Rights or IHL is an advantage. Registration with the Mozambican Bar Association and a minimum of two years of experience in legal counseling or a similar position are required.
You have good interpersonal communication skills to interact with the General Directorate, Movement members, government departments, the judicial system, and negotiating parties. You are fluent in Portuguese and English, have expert-level IT skills, and are able to adapt and learn.
You must have a good knowledge of CVM and the other components of the movement — the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies — as well as the socio-political context of Mozambique.
Send your updated curriculum vitae, with references, and a cover letter indicating your salary expectation to rhf.cvm@redcross.org.mz.
The application deadline is October 28, 2026.
Remuneration is not stated in the announcement; indicate your salary expectation in the cover letter.
