About the Foundation and the project

The François Sommer Foundation (FFS) works in conservation in Mozambique. In this recruitment, the FFS works with the Gilé National Park Administration (PNAG) to run the PNAG Development Project, in Zambézia Province.

Gilé National Park is a conservation area where the project links field work with local communities and with international partners. It is in this context that the Operations Manager post sits: it is the role that keeps the project running day to day.

In practice, the candidate has to drive the project's activities, coordinate the resources and the teams involved, and keep the work in line with the public institutions and the donors that fund the project. It is a bridging role between the internal team, the authorities and the communities.

The focus of the post is to keep the PNAG Development Project moving forward continuously in the field. It is a field-facing role, with direct contact with the communities and with the teams that implement the project, and it demands the ability to work around surprises as the work advances.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a person with proven experience in the management of conservation areas and in the delivery of complex, multidisciplinary projects. It is the kind of role that asks for leading teams and coordinating resources at the same time.

You will work with partners of very different profiles — from government to the international donor — and, in parallel, directly with local communities. The person has to be comfortable acting across all these settings and to keep the project on time and on budget. The ability to hold all these actors together is the core of the post.

Day-to-day responsibilities

• Lead the operations management of the PNAG Development Project, in the field and in its support structures.
• Drive the delivery of the project's complex, multidisciplinary activities, ensuring deadlines are met and quality is delivered.
• Manage the administrative and human-resources side of the project, including teams and contractors.
• Maintain and coordinate the relationship with government authorities and with international donors.
• Work in partnership with the local communities of the Gilé district, linking the project to their realities.
• Communicate in Portuguese and in English, in contact with local teams and international partners.
