About The MENTOR Initiative

The MENTOR Initiative is an organization that implements programs in Mozambique in accordance with humanitarian principles and quality standards. In the area of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), it works closely with local authorities, health institutions, communities, partners, and contractors to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The role

The WASH Specialist leads the planning, design, implementation, monitoring, and quality assurance of all Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene activities across the organization's programs, both in communities and health facilities. They are the technical and management reference for WASH infrastructure, from design and technical specifications to works supervision, operation, and maintenance.

Two fronts

The role covers two fronts. On the community front: safe water supply, sanitation, hygiene promotion, behavior change, and distribution of WASH kits and supplies. On the health facility front: rehabilitation of water and sanitation infrastructure, and infection prevention and control (IPC).

Day-to-day responsibilities

• Lead the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of WASH activities, and develop annual, quarterly, and monthly work plans.
• Draft designs for water supply systems, sanitation facilities, handwashing stations, and waste management infrastructure, along with respective technical specifications.
• Supervise works, verify progress and quality of work, and monitor contractors' compliance with environmental, social, health, and safety (ESHS) requirements.
• Lead hygiene promotion and behavior change, and develop information, education, and communication materials.
• Plan and supervise the distribution of hygiene kits and water treatment products, with transparent processes and post-distribution monitoring.
• Support the implementation of WASH and infection prevention and control standards in health facilities, and train their staff.
• Develop monitoring and evaluation tools, analyze program data, and draft internal and donor technical reports.
• Develop and monitor WASH activity budgets and coordinate with logistics, finance, administration, and procurement teams.
• Supervise WASH staff, conduct performance reviews, and organize capacity building.
• Represent the organization at WASH Cluster meetings and technical working groups, and contribute to proposals and strategic plans.
