Key Details: CONTACT is recruiting a Waste Management Officer for the Afungi camps, in Cabo Delgado province, on behalf of a client — a multinational in the energy sector. Applications must be submitted through the official recruitment portal (Workable) by October 15, 2026.
About the Role
The position is field-based in Afungi and reports to the Facilities Manager and the Waste Management Coordinator. In practice, you will supervise the waste management contractor: they handle the collection and handling of waste in the area, and your role is to ensure everything operates according to the contract and approved procedures.
Site Awareness
You will conduct awareness sessions (toolbox talks) for waste generators across the area — camp staff, kitchens, workshops, warehouses, and construction teams — on segregation rules and common mistakes.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Monitor and control the daily activities of the waste management contractor in the assigned area on behalf of the client.
- Verify that contractor activities comply with the contract, approved procedures, and work methods, including collection frequency and routes, team size and competency, personal protective equipment, vehicle and equipment condition, load securing, and workplace housekeeping.
- Identify deviations from contractual clauses or procedures, stop unsafe or non-compliant activities, report them to the Waste Management Coordinator, and support the follow-up and closure of corrective actions.
- Provide factual field evidence, including photographic records, to support non-conformances and contractual measures.
- Supervise segregation, collection, labeling, and storage at generation points and waste management facilities, and verify the correct classification of organic, mixed, metal, construction, and hazardous streams in accordance with approved waste management procedures.
- Check the number, type, condition, color coding, labeling, and signage of bins, skips, and containers at each generation point, and require the contractor to replace or repair damaged or missing units.
- Identify and rectify cross-contamination at the point of generation, record repeat offenders, and report persistent non-compliance to management.
- Conduct regular inspections of storage areas, skips, containers, and hazardous waste areas, and ensure collection is carried out according to the agreed schedule and route, using the correct vehicles and equipment before containers overflow.
- Witness loading, weighing, and transfer, confirming that quantities and stream types recorded on manifests and transfer notes match what was collected.
- Track internal waste movements and support the verification of manifests, logs, and certificates.
- Inspect satellite accumulation points regarding segregation, compatibility, secondary containment, labeling, closed containers, weather protection, and maximum storage duration.
- Verify that spill kits are available, complete, and serviceable; respond to and report spills, leaks, and substandard practices.
- Conduct regular waste-related environmental inspections in the area and ensure field data, checklists, and photographic records are accurately completed and archived.
- Collect and submit accurate data on waste quantities, segregation compliance, and treatment activities, and present the daily area report to the Waste Management Coordinator.
- Contribute to weekly and monthly environmental reports with verified field data, and support internal audits, inspections, and site visits.
- Raise awareness among contractors and site personnel regarding waste segregation and environmental best practices.
- Enforce and promote workplace HSE Golden Rules and daily environmental best practices, complying with permit-to-work system requirements, traffic management, manual handling of loads, and personal protective equipment.
- Immediately report incidents, near misses, and environmental non-conformances.
What the Company Offers
- Compensation commensurate with experience and the level of responsibility of the role, along with personal development opportunities.
