Applying via WhatsApp in Mozambique: A Guide
How to apply for a job via WhatsApp in Mozambique: template message, PDF CV with the correct file name, what to write, and what never to send to the recruiter.

Applying via WhatsApp in Mozambique works — it is the channel where small and medium-sized enterprises recruit first. But it works with rules: a short message, a PDF CV with your name, and zero voice notes on first contact. Those who send the right message get ahead of those who only write "good afternoon".
WhatsApp dominates the local recruitment market because it is where everyone is: there are about 19.1 million mobile connections in the country (DataReportal, Digital 2026) and the phone of choice is the mobile phone, not the office computer. The job opening in your neighborhood, bakery, store, or transport company arrives via WhatsApp — and the application happens there too.
The problem is that almost no one teaches how to apply properly via WhatsApp. The result: recruiters receive dozens of standalone "good afternoon" messages, 4-minute voice notes, and photos of handwritten CVs. Anyone who follows the rules in this guide stands out right from the very first message.
The short answer
- First message = short and complete: greeting, job title, source, 2-3 lines of fit, and attachment right in the first send.
- CV always in PDF with your name in the file name: "CV_Firstname_Lastname.pdf" — never a screenshot or photo of paper.
- Presentable profile: neutral photo, real name — the recruiter sees your profile when opening the chat.
- Business hours: send between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM on a business day; early morning or late night is not urgency, it is carelessness.
- Never a voice note on first contact — the recruiter cannot listen to 20 voice notes from candidates.
- Follow-up after 2-3 business days, once, politely. Pestering every day gets your application disqualified.
Prepare your WhatsApp before applying
Before sending your first application, set up your "storefront". When clicking on your contact, the recruiter sees three things: your photo, name, and status. Each one speaks for you:
- Photo: simple and neutral — face visible, clean background, no sunglasses, no group of friends. It does not need to be a studio photo; it needs to show that you take yourself seriously.
- Name: your full real name. Nicknames, phrases, or emojis in your name hurt credibility in a professional context.
- Status: if you usually post status updates, ensure the latest ones are unobjectionable. It is not censoring your life — it is choosing what you display to whoever is evaluating you professionally.
This setup takes ten minutes and is worth more than any introductory phrase: your application starts being evaluated before the recruiter even reads your message.
The template message that works
A good WhatsApp application message fits on one screen without scrolling. It has five elements: greeting, identification, job title and source, 2-3 lines of fit, and the attachment. The full template:
Good afternoon. My name is Elsa Mabjaia, I am an accounting technician with 3 years of experience.
I saw the Financial Assistant vacancy that your company posted in the Vagas Xangai group and would like to apply.
I have experience in petty cash entries, reconciliations, and monthly closing, as well as immediate availability. Please find attached my CV in PDF format.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and I remain at your disposal.
Let's analyze it section by section. The first paragraph introduces you with your name and profession — the recruiter instantly knows who they are speaking with. The second states the position and the honest source: if you saw it in a group, mention the group; if you saw it on a poster, mention where.
The source is not a minor detail — it helps the recruiter evaluate their channels and shows you are not firing off random messages. The third is your fit: two or three skills that align with the position, plus your availability. And the attachment goes in the very same message, so the CV stays alongside the text.
If the job ad says "contact the recruiter and mention you saw it on source X", follow it to the letter — companies test whether candidates read instructions. And if the listing asks for a specific subject line, write it at the beginning of the message exactly as requested.
The PDF CV: the detail that sets candidates apart
The right attachment follows three rules: it is a PDF, includes your name in the file name, and has a small file size. "CV_Elsa_Mabjaia.pdf" opens with your name right at the top of the recruiter's folder; "final document (3).pdf" or "scan_photo.jpg" gets lost and causes confusion. If you need to build yours, the step-by-step guide to making a CV on your mobile phone shows how to generate the PDF without a computer, and the free CV templates provide a ready-to-fill foundation.
A photo of a printed page is not a CV: text gets cut off, recruiters cannot read it on a small screen, and they cannot share it with decision-makers. Anyone struggling to convert to PDF on a mobile phone can do so with free scanner apps — it takes 5 minutes and changes how your application is perceived.
And double-check before sending: open your attachment yourself to verify it is the correct CV, the most recent version, with updated contact details. Sending a CV intended for another company's application happens more often than it seems — and signals carelessness.
Mistakes that eliminate you in the first minute
"Good afternoon" and waiting. Sending a bare message with no context forces the recruiter to reply "good afternoon, how can I help you?" — when they have 40 applications to review. Send everything at once: whoever wants to talk will reply.
Voice notes on first contact. Always a mistake. The recruiter is in an office or attending to customers and cannot listen to twenty 3-minute voice messages. Text is read in seconds; audio gets postponed — and postponed messages are rarely reopened.
Overly long message. Your CV details your career; the message sells your fit. More than one screen of text before the attachment is reading nobody does on a mobile phone. If you want to say more, save it for a cover letter — the Inademy Guide cover letter article shows the structure.
Posting in groups without reading the rules. Many job groups prohibit applications inside the group or have their own specific format. Respecting group guidelines shows consideration for the admin and prevents your number from being removed — which is where the job postings come from.
Tagging strangers. The belief that "without tagging, no one receives it" is a myth; the message arrives regardless. And tagging notification sent to a recruiter who does not know you is intrusive — save the notification ping for people who already chat with you.
Repeated phone calls. Calling the recruiter uninvited is one of the most annoying mistakes. WhatsApp is for text; calls are for when they initiate them, or when the process itself reaches the interview stage.
Beware of scams
The channel's popularity attracts scams. The rule is absolute: no legitimate recruitment process charges money — no "registration fee", no "CV review fee", and no "processing stamp". If they ask for any payment to move forward with your application, it is a scam; block them and report it in the group where it appeared.
Other red flags: recruiters without company identification, invitations for an "interview" at a private residence, requests for bank details before a contract, or artificial urgency ("today only!"). Your ID card (BI), tax number (NUIT), and bank details only come into play after a contract is signed with a confirmed company.
Before making any commitment, research the company name and see if the position appears on the Inademy job portal — job listings on the Inademy platform undergo verification.
After sending: the right follow-up
You submitted your application properly. What now? Wait 2-3 business days before making any contact. If there is no response, send a single short message:
Good afternoon, [recruiter's name]. I sent my application for the Financial Assistant vacancy on Monday. I remain interested and available for any stage of the process. Thank you!
Just one. If they still do not reply, let it go — a "no" answer on this channel is usually silence, and pestering will not convert silence into a yes. What actually works is to keep applying: while waiting for a reply to this one, the next job opportunity has already appeared. Create your profile on Inademy and activate email and WhatsApp alerts — new job openings will come to you without having to scan through groups.
And when the recruiter replies, respond quickly: prompt replies show genuine interest. Confirm interviews with a "Confirmed, thank you" — short, correct, no voice note.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send my application on a Saturday night?
Technically you can; strategically you shouldn't. Messages received outside business hours sink to the bottom of the recruiter's inbox and by Monday morning already have half a page of newer chats on top of them. Send it on a business day, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM: your message will be near the top when they open the app.
The recruiter hasn't replied in 2 days. Should I follow up again?
Send one follow-up message after 2-3 business days, as shown in the template above. After that, silence is an answer — and your energy is better spent on the next application. Pestering daily closes doors not just at this company: recruiters move between companies.
Should I send my CV in Word or PDF format?
Always PDF. Word opens differently on every mobile phone — fonts break, pages shift — while PDF keeps your layout intact on any screen. Sending a PDF demonstrates that you possess the basic digital skills required for the job.
What if the job ad says "send a voice message"?
In that case, a voice message is what they asked for — follow the instruction to the letter with a short, rehearsed voice note: your name, the position, one line explaining your fit, and a sign-off. Half a minute, with no background noise. The "never send voice notes" rule applies to spontaneous initial contact; when the listing asks for a voice note, the voice note is the test.
Can I apply directly from a job group?
Yes: read the job post to the end and follow the channel indicated — recruiter's phone number, email, or link. Applying inside the group (by tagging the admin) should only be done when the post explicitly instructs to do so. And keep the exact job title for your message: it shows you read carefully.
What should I write on first contact if I don't know the recruiter's name?
Use "Good afternoon" without a name and go straight into the full application. Names can be discovered during the conversation. What matters in the first contact is not the greeting — it is the complete message with job title, source, and attached CV.
