What companies look for in a driver's CV in Mozambique
Transport companies, distributors, NGOs, and service providers read dozens of driver CVs every month. They make decisions quickly, based on just a handful of signals:
- Licence category, right at the top: B for light vehicles, C for heavy goods, D for passengers, A for motorcycles. This is the first filter.
- Years and type of experience: how many years behind the wheel, with which vehicles (7.5 tonnes? light vehicles?), and for what kind of company.
- Known routes: "Maputo–Xai-Xai–Beira routes" means much more than "travel experience". Drivers who know the route know the checkpoints and schedules.
- Safety record: zero at-fault accidents is the strongest point a driver can list.
- Availability: shifts, long-distance trips, weekends. Stating this upfront saves everyone an unnecessary conversation.
- Employer references: a quick phone call can decide a hiring decision — include the name of someone who can vouch for you.
If your CV answers these six points right in the first few paragraphs, you are already ahead of most applicants.
What turns recruiters away: claiming licence categories you do not hold, hiding accidents that appear on your record, and listing "immediate availability" when it is not true. Many companies run a practical driving test on the spot — what you write needs to survive a test drive.
What is inside the completed template
The file includes a complete example for a fictional professional driver, along with a note reminding you that the details are illustrative. Here is what each section gives you:
- Personal details on a single line: city, phone/WhatsApp, and email — straight to the point.
- Profile summary in four lines highlighting key selling points: 10 years of experience, southern region routes, zero accidents, vehicle care, and punctual deliveries.
- Qualifications and certificates: valid Category C driving licence, defensive driving certificate (2023), first aid (2022), and completed Grade 9.
- Work experience across two roles in reverse chronological order: driving 7.5-tonne trucks on interprovincial routes and urban distribution; prior to that, driving light vehicles delivering pharmaceuticals to four pharmacies.
- Availability clearly stated: immediate start, shift work, travel away from home, and weekends.
- References named from both current and previous employers, with contact details available upon request.
Notice the level of detail: each position describes what the driver actually did — loading and checking goods against delivery notes, keeping up with basic maintenance, and confirming deliveries via WhatsApp. Don't just write "driver" and expect recruiters to guess the rest.
The sections follow the standard layout logistics recruiters prefer: personal details, profile, qualifications, experience, availability, and references. Sticking to this order makes life easier for anyone reviewing dozens of CVs a day and keeps yours looking tidy.

How to adapt it to your situation: light vehicles, heavy vehicles, and motorbikes
This layout works for everyone; just adjust the content based on the type of vehicle you drive:
- Light vehicle driver (Category B licence): highlight your knowledge of your city and surrounding areas, punctual deliveries, and customer care. Pharmacies, retail, and services value drivers who deliver reliably and interact well with customers at the door.
- Heavy vehicle driver (Category C or C1 licence): include interprovincial routes, types of cargo you have transported, delivery notes, weight control, and basic maintenance. If you have driven flatbed or open-box trucks, make sure to mention it.
- Motorbike courier (Category A licence): focus on fast deliveries and local distribution. Knowledge of local neighbourhoods is your biggest asset; mention if you have your own helmet and a track record of timely daily deliveries.
In all three cases, keep the format "job title — company, city — dates" and add two to three bullet points of actual duties per role. Use exact dates with month and year: "June 2018 to present" says much more than "2 years".
If you recently upgraded your licence category — for example, from light to heavy vehicles — put the new category upfront and explain the transition in one line: "after 6 years in urban distribution, I moved to interprovincial freight". This shows career progression and supports your target salary.
How much does a driver earn in Mozambique
To set realistic expectations: according to data published by WageIndicator for 2026, a heavy goods vehicle driver at the start of their career earns between MZN 15,262 and MZN 40,757 net per month, rising to MZN 20,535–49,720 after five years of service, based on a 48-hour week.
This range is broad because it depends on the company, the cargo, and the routes. We explain the figures in detail in our article on driver salaries in Mozambique.
Three things push pay towards the higher end of the scale: your licence category (heavy vehicles pay more than light ones), long-distance routes involving overnight stays, and defensive driving or first aid certificates. A driver with a clean record and strong references negotiates from a much stronger position.
Certificates that give you an edge
Beyond your driving licence, these certificates carry real weight with employers:
- Defensive driving: shows you know how to anticipate risks. It is one of the most valued certificates in freight transport — the sample CV includes the 2023 certificate.
- First aid: reassures any employer who puts people in your care, from passengers to schools and NGOs.
- Vocational training (INEFOP) in basic mechanics, logistics, or workplace safety: sets you apart when competing candidates have similar experience.
- Additional licence categories (C1, D): each extra category broadens the roles you can apply for.
- Grade 9 or Grade 12: many transport companies require a minimum level of education to handle reports and waybills.
Keep your originals safe and bring copies to your interview. On your CV, write the course name and year; the recruiter will verify the rest later.
Where to get them: INEFOP provincial centres offer short courses throughout the year, and licensed driving schools run defensive driving training. Also check with your current employer — companies often cover training costs for existing drivers.

Frequently asked questions
Is it mandatory to include your driving licence category on your CV?
It is the first detail a recruiter looks for — without it, your CV loses value right away. Write down your category and make sure it is valid. If you drive light vehicles, write B; heavy goods, C; passenger vehicles, D; motorcycles, A.
Should I include a photo on a driver CV?
It is not mandatory, but it helps: a photo builds trust and is common practice in Mozambique for roles with public contact. Use a 3×4 photo, a neutral background, and neat grooming — full guidelines are in our guide on what to include on a CV: photo, ID, place of birth, and references.
I have never worked as a driver. What should I write?
Start with the driving licence you hold, even if recently obtained, your full availability, and any practical driving experience: your own motorbike, occasional deliveries, or helping with a family business. Apply first for driver assistant or urban distribution roles. Our first job CV template has the right structure to get started without experience.
Should I send my CV in Word or PDF format?
In PDF format, unless stated otherwise: the file keeps its exact layout on the recipient's computer. Word is useful when a company requests an editable document, for example to fill out internal forms.
Can I fill out the template on my phone?
Yes, you can: the Google Docs app opens docx files and lets you edit field by field. Save it at the end and double-check your dates. We have a complete guide on how to make a CV on your phone, from download to sending.
