We built this template at Inademy Guide using real CVs that work in Mozambique. We follow job applications sent to private companies, retail businesses, and NGOs, so we know what makes a recruiter stop scrolling and read carefully. The file comes pre-filled with an example from Inácio, an operations manager in Maputo, so you can see exactly where everything fits before entering your own details.

What makes a CV "modern" (and when to use it)
A modern CV isn't about fancy decoration. It's organized to be read in 30 seconds: recruiters see who you are, how to reach you, and what you've achieved without having to search for anything. Design does that heavy lifting — not flashy colors or exotic fonts.
Here are the features that make a modern template work:
- Green sidebar with photo, contact details, and highlights: the essentials are right at hand in a single glance.
- Highlighted numbers: "stockouts: 9% → 3% in 18 months" says more than three lines of plain text.
- One page: the entire template fits on an A4 sheet, even with 8 years of experience.
- Clean typography: crisp fonts, generous white space, with no borders or charts.
- Subtle icons for phone, email, and LinkedIn: they guide the eye without distraction.
Use a CV like this when applying to modern private companies: sales, retail, customer service, marketing, logistics, tech, and many NGOs. It also pays off when your experience has strong metrics that deserve a place in the sidebar. If this sounds like your situation, a modern Word CV template like this delivers the right look without any design effort.
What to avoid: skill bar charts, two columns of body text, and four-color palettes. The subtle green sidebar is enough; the rest of the document stays black on white. Every extra element steals time away from what matters — your experience.
What is included in the template: sidebar, photo, and highlights
The file comes pre-filled with sample data — there is a note warning that these are fictional details so that no one submits the CV without editing it first. When you open it, you will find:
- Green sidebar with your name, space for a 3×4 photo (marked as optional), phone number with WhatsApp, two email addresses, city and country, and your LinkedIn link.
- Short, three-line profile: who you are, years of experience, field, and a concrete result — in the example, an operations manager with 8 years in retail and distribution in Maputo and Matola.
- Highlights in three bullet points with numbers: reduction in stockouts, customer response time, driving licence with own vehicle.
- Work experience with dates in Portuguese format ("March 2024 to present"), job title, company, and two to three bullet points per role.
- Education, skills, and languages: bachelor's degree, IT skills (advanced Excel, POS systems), Portuguese, English, and Changana.
- References: "Available upon request." — the recommended standard when no one has asked you for contacts yet.
If your experience does not feature large numbers, do not make them up: use real frequencies and responsibilities ("serving 40 customers per day", "coordinating a team of 6 people"). What the key highlights require is accuracy, not grandeur.

Step-by-step guide to editing in Word
It takes less than 20 minutes. You need Word (any recent version) or free Google Docs in your browser.
- Download the file and open it in Word. The template is a standard docx file: no passwords, no macros.
- Replace the photo: click on the sidebar image, delete it, and insert your 3×4 photo (Insert → Pictures). In Google Docs, click on the photo and select "Replace image". Use a neutral background, with no sunglasses or caps.
- Update the sidebar contact details: your WhatsApp number, a professional email like firstname.lastname, your current city, and LinkedIn if your profile is up to date.
- Rewrite your Profile in three lines: role, years of experience, field, and key result. Read the job ad you are applying for and use its keywords.
- Adjust the Highlights: pick three real numbers from your career and write them using the format "what you did → how much → in how long".
- Confirm your experience: delete the sample roles, add yours in reverse chronological order (most recent first), and keep the periods with month and year.
- Save as a PDF (File → Save As → PDF) before sending: a PDF keeps the sidebar layout in place on any computer. Only send the docx file if the job ad explicitly requests Word format.
On your phone, the Google Docs app can also edit docx files — but the sidebar is sensitive, so edit the text and not the text boxes. If you always edit on your phone, follow our guide to making a CV on your phone, with a step-by-step guide adapted to the small screen.
Before saving, do a final proofread out loud: read your profile and highlights as if you were the recruiter. Look for missing dates, misspelled company names, and any old email address still in the sidebar. A CV with a spelling mistake in a company name ruins the effect created by the design. Also check the file name: "CV_Firstname_Lastname.pdf" helps anyone receiving dozens of attachments a day.
When NOT to use a modern design
There are places where a sidebar with a photo works against you. In conservative sectors — banking, insurance, law, accounting, auditing, and most public institutions — recruiters expect a plain, single-column, black-and-white CV. There, a modern design comes across as an attempt to make up for a lack of substance. Instead, use a simple template from our free list of CV templates.
The second case is automated screening. Large companies and agencies use software that reads your CV in file order. A sidebar can cause the text to be read out of order, scrambling your sections on the other end.
When the job posting asks for an application through a portal or mentions a "recruitment system", read our CV guide for applicant tracking systems (ATS) and consider a single-column layout.
Rule of thumb: when you don't know who will read it and the job ad doesn't show a human email address, play it safe. A modern design wins when there is a real person spending 40 seconds looking at your file.
Between the two extremes lies a middle ground: if you like the modern template but are applying to a formal company, keep the structure and remove the photo and icons. You lose the visual flair, but keep a clear hierarchy. It's an acceptable compromise when the role feels somewhere in between.

Where this advice comes from
The guidance in this article comes straight from the Inademy team's daily work with real job vacancies and applications across every province: we look at which CVs recruiters read to the end and which ones get left behind.
This template reflects that experience — while the sample details are fictional, the structure is based on CVs that made the cut. To continue, read our guide on what to include in your CV: photo, ID, place of birth, and references.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pay for Word to edit the template?
No. The file opens in Google Docs at no cost: upload it to your Drive and edit it in your browser. It also works in Word Online (free with a Microsoft account) and LibreOffice. The sidebar formatting stays intact across all three.
Is a photo mandatory on the CV?
No — it is optional, and the template clearly marks the space as such. A photo helps in customer-facing roles (sales, reception, customer service) and is common practice in Mozambique. If you use one, go with a 3×4 size, a neutral background, and a natural expression. The full guidelines are in the guide on what to put on your CV, linked above.
Does the template work on mobile phones?
It works in the Google Docs app on both Android and iPhone: open the file, tap the pencil icon, and edit field by field. Save it when you finish and double-check the dates before sending.
Should I send the CV in Word or PDF?
In PDF format, unless the job ad specifies otherwise. A PDF preserves the sidebar, colors, and exact fonts on any device; Word may rearrange layout boxes when opened in a different version of the program. Save both files and send the PDF by default.
Is it suitable for first-time job seekers?
Yes, with a few adjustments: if you don't have formal experience, replace "Highlights" with concrete skills — IT, languages, driver's license, internships, or volunteer work — and keep your profile summary short. If you prefer an even simpler foundation, our first-job CV template is designed specifically for that case.
