When Mozambique deals with a cyclone, an election, or the rollout of a fresh development initiative, someone needs to clearly explain what the United Nations is doing and why. That responsibility rests with the UN Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Maputo, which is currently hiring an Associate Communications Officer — level NO-B, National Professional Officer — to work right alongside the Head of the RCO.
This role stems from the UN development system reform, which expanded the Resident Coordinator's role as the Secretary-General's representative on the ground. In real terms, your work will carry wide reach: you will support every United Nations agency, fund, and programme operating in Mozambique under a single, unified communication strategy.
This is far from a passive role: every single task you tackle feeds directly into the UN system's communication strategy across the country.
We are seeking someone who communicates clearly and loves backing up their points with numbers. Your day-to-day work will blend sharp writing, data interpretation, and close collaboration with journalists and partners — so you should stay calm under pressure, meet your deadlines, and know how to adjust your tone on the same topic whether addressing a government minister, a reporter, or a local community. The organization also strongly values a gender perspective in its work and equal participation of women and men across all areas.
Submit your application on the United Nations Inspira platform: create or log into your account at inspira.un.org and apply for opening 283001 with a complete, up-to-date profile — including all professional experience and contact details, as the hiring manager uses this information to evaluate your eligibility. The platform sends an automatic confirmation by email within 24 hours; if it does not arrive, your form may not have gone through.
Deadline: 10 September 2026 (11:59 p.m. New York time; the announcement is removed from the portal at that hour). Apply early — the UN recommends submitting well before the closing time.
The process includes a substantive evaluation — such as a written test — followed by a competency-based interview, conducted by phone or video call. If you want to feel confident, the guide Interview in English: phrases and preparation prepares you for the assessment stage, while the guide Online interview: what changes shows you what to expect when speaking over a video call.
