The Embassy of Switzerland in Mozambique is seeking a National Programme Officer to strengthen the team overseeing the Swiss cooperation project portfolio in the country. This is a senior-level, full-equipa role, based in Maputo on an in-person basis. The application deadline closes on 17 September 2026 and the start date is planned for 1 November 2026.
At stake is the more operational side of diplomacy: supporting the mission to identify priorities, design sustainable programmes and partnerships, and rigorously monitor what each initiative delivers on the ground. Before you proceed, note a detail that disqualifies entire applications: the vacancy requires you to send your CV and motivation letter together, in a single PDF file — and without the motivation letter, the application will not be considered.
Switzerland is a long-standing partner of Mozambique in development cooperation, and the announcement itself highlights this history: a lasting commitment that included, among other milestones, mediating the Maputo Peace Agreement, signed in 2019. The Embassy, based in the capital, represents this presence — and is responsible for this recruitment.
The post arises from strengthening the strategic engagement of the mission across four cooperation fronts: resilience, climate change adaptation, community and institutional development, and local economic development. The new appointee will operate within these areas, in constant contact with partners, government entities and communities.
In your day-to-day, you will:
Note the structure of the role: there is a management component (budgets, deadlines, processes) and a representation component (coordination tables, talks with government and partners, analysing the national context). The successful candidate must be comfortable with both — this is neither a secretarial nor a purely administrative post.
Someone who navigates smoothly between different worlds: a technical meeting with an implementing partner in the morning, a coordination table with state entities in the afternoon, and a project visit outside Maputo. Cooperation requires people who know how to listen to communities and institutions and turn those insights into useful advice for decision-makers.
Institutional liaison skills also matter: government entities, international partners and communities have different schedules and priorities, and the role thrives precisely on bridging these gaps. If you recognise yourself in this profile, you have a rare opportunity here to work from the inside of international cooperation.
An honest note on salary: the job posting does not state the currency or the remuneration amount, so no figures are listed here — it is better to remain silent than to make things up. The full package is finalised during the recruiter's process, as they are best placed to explain it in detail.
