The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is recruiting a Protection, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Officer in Chiúre district, Cabo Delgado province. The work is with children and caregivers, among displaced families and host communities.
JRS accompanies and defends the rights of people forced to flee their homes. In Cabo Delgado, our presence means being close to families who have restarted their lives far from home — and this position is to support precisely that fresh start, with methodology and humanity.
The role reports to the Programs Coordinator and the contract is for 1 year, renewable, subject to funding availability.
Chiúre is an area where the humanitarian context is part of daily life: families have rebuilt their lives, services are restoring, and children need stable reference points. The work is field-based, directly with communities, and involves a lot of listening, observing, and acting methodically.
It is a demanding role: cases are real and, at times, heavy. Yet it is also a role where the impact is tangible: a child reunited with their family, a family obtaining the documentation they need, a community finding space to talk about what they feel.
We are looking for someone who feels comfortable working directly with people — children, caregivers, community leaders — and maintains the right balance: close enough to be trustworthy, firm enough to remain steady on tough days. Others' suffering does not frighten you — nor do you take it home.
It takes patience and firmness: knowing how to be present with a mother who lost everything, knowing how to talk with a group of children who do not yet trust adults, and ensuring each case is properly followed up day after day. If you prefer concrete reality over rhetoric, this role is for you.
About the salary: the official announcement does not disclose the remuneration. Demonstrate your value right from your application and save discussions about conditions for your conversation with JRS.
